Department of History
About the Department
Nestled in the historically significant landscape of Plassey, studying history at our college offers a profoundly enriching and distinctive academic experience. The Department of History has been an integral part of the institution since its inception in 2010, initially offering General Course studies. Over time, it has flourished into the largest department within the college, both in terms of student enrolment and faculty strength. The introduction of the History Honours program in 2014 marked a significant milestone in our department’s journey. From its humble beginnings with a small cohort of undergraduate students, the department has now evolved into a prestigious academic unit renowned for its excellence in both teaching and research.
As of July 1, 2023, the department has embraced the NEP-2020 curriculum, alongside the previously implemented CBCS curriculum for History Honours, introduced in 2018. These courses, meticulously crafted by the Under Graduate Council of the University of Kalyani and sanctioned by the Higher Education Department of the Government of West Bengal, reflect our commitment to providing a robust and comprehensive education. With a dedicated team of six faculty members, the department is actively engaged in a variety of scholarly endeavours, including guest lectures, seminars, documentary screenings, and educational trips that expose students to lectures by eminent historians.
In addition to academic pursuits, the department fosters a vibrant cultural atmosphere through events such as Agomoni Utsab, Basanta Utsab, and Alumni Reunions. These activities not only celebrate cultural diversity but also enhance creativity, social skills, and a sense of community among students. Among the six faculty members, four are currently pursuing their doctoral research, further contributing to the department's scholarly environment. Our faculty regularly participate in national and international seminars, presenting research papers and publishing their work in esteemed peer-reviewed journals and books.
Our students, too, have made their mark, winning several prestigious awards in student seminars across various colleges. We take pride in maintaining a healthy academic environment and fostering strong, supportive relationships between teachers and students. The department actively encourages students to prepare for competitive examinations such as the National Eligibility Test (NET) and the State-Level Eligibility Test (SET), with a particular emphasis on guiding them toward careers in teaching. Beyond academics, our students are encouraged to contribute meaningfully to society by exploring alternative career paths in fields such as journalism, archaeology, museology, museum curation, archival work, social activism, and roles within both government and non-governmental organizations.
In summary, the Department of History at our college is a dynamic and thriving academic community, committed to cultivating intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and societal contribution among its students.

Best Practices
In addition to regular classes and co-curricular activities, the Department of History has consistently strived to implement innovative approaches in the teaching-learning process for its students. Through various feedback mechanisms, the department observed that frequent university examinations and class suspensions hindered students' academic progress for the other students, making it challenging for teachers to complete the syllabus on time. To address this, the department initiated online classes during extended periods of class suspension, whether due to university exams or long holidays. Faculty members conducted lessons and doubt-clearing sessions throughout these breaks.
Learning from the COVID-19 pandemic, the department has shifted its focus towards enhancing its online activities. Initiatives include student seminars through slide presentations, online assignment submissions, and doubt-clearing sessions via social media platforms. These efforts aim to ensure that students become comfortable with technology and integrate it seamlessly into their learning experience.
