About the Department
The Department of English started its journey with the General Course in 2010. However, the Honours Course was introduced five years later in 2015.
The courses have been approved by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of W.B. and are taught under the University of Kalyani. The Department of English is
committed to provide sincere care and support to the students and uphold a high level performance. We organize seminars and workshops, publish a wall magazine
‘Phynix’, arrange invited lectures and maintain an academic calendar. We make power point presentations, and movies based on novels and dramas are screened and
analyzed in the virtual classroom. We take class tests at regular intervals. We follow recommended texts, and adequate numbers of lectures are delivered, paying
close attention that no necessary parts of the lesson are left untouched. We make students familiar with suggested topics for class presentation and books for
further readings prescribed in the syllabus. We maintain a good teacher-student relationship. Encouraging active participation of the students, we ask them to
raise questions and motivate them into teamwork for solving different issues regarding the lessons taught with the help of the teachers. The college library has
a rich collection of English books. Initially intake capacity of the Honours Course was sixty (60), now it has been increased to 100.
Though in the beginning only one student appeared in the final exam and passes it securing 37 marks, the number of students appearing in the final
examination has increased ever since.
At present, our teaching faculty consists of Dr. Abu Siddik and Mr. Chandan Barman. Mr. Chandan Barman, Assistant Professor, has been acting as
the Head of the Department since 2017.
